Description: The Westerner is Salt Lake's premiere country-and-western dance club. The dance floor alone is bigger than most clubs, and traffic on it goes around like a big merry-go-round, unless there's a line dance.Walls in the venerable club, which first opened at a smaller venue next door in 1965, are decorated with neon beer signs, antique farm implements and glassed memorabilia featuring some of the stars who have played on the small stage.
Like any good bar, The Westerner has quite a history. While it's more genteel these days, old-timers tell stories of brawls and fights. Expect to have purses or bags searched by security before entering the club.
The mechanical bull that patrons once tried to ride is out to pasture, a victim of increasing insurance costs. Pool tables have been replaced by seating, but there are still informal "singles" and "couples" sides of the dance floor. On a given night, you might see members of the Intermountain Dance Association showing their stuff on the large wooden floor.
There's a $3 cover charge for live music on Fridays and Saturdays.
Dance lessons are offered Wednesday through Saturday
